Come celebrate the Fall harvest with an organic Apple and Asian pear U-Pick at Gabriel Farm in Sebastopol, and a Community Apple Pressing the following weekend at Blackberry Farm in Bolinas.
Lucy and Torrey Olson lovingly tend to their small, 14 acre, organic orchard in Sebastopol. Originally planted in 1973 with a multitude of “dwarf” apple and pear varieties, the Olsens’s have been nurturing these relatively old trees and sustaining the environment by maintaining organic farming practices—a relatively uncommon practice among today’s orchards. In addition to picking delicious apples (varieties likely at that time: Fuji, Rome, Pink Ladies) and pears (Yali, Shinko, Niitaka) straight off the tree, come walk the land with Torrey and learn:
- Why is Organic apple and pear farming so difficult?
- Why are labor costs estimated to be 50% higher on Organic orchards?
- What are “dwarf” trees?
- What are the differences between Asian pears grown in the US and European varieties?
Attendees can pick for themselves and/or pick a little extra for Slow Food’s Community Apple Pressing taking place the following weekend. If we’re lucky, a certain obscure, but highly regarded (among members of his own family) pie-maker from Cleveland, OH may allow us to break pie with him to celebrate the Harvest.
For those who wish, join us for an informal gathering at the Ace in the Hole Cider Pub acecider.com.
Learn, taste, and share the Harvest together at this warm, small family farm.
NOTE: as this is a very small farm, we are limited in the number of cars and attendees that we can accommodate. Carpool strongly recommended. We apologize for this consideration. Details to follow...

From Marin Organic’s Web Site: “In 1972, Aggie and Walter Murch bought four acres known as the ‘old Peters Dairy’ on Gospel Flat in Bolinas. There the Murchs raised children, horses and vegetables until the children grew up and the horses died. Now Aggie concentrates on her orchard of English and American heritage apples, twenty-four different varieties in all, one of which has survived from Mrs. Peter’s original garden. Roaming the orchard is a flock of flamboyantly feathered chickens. In addition to the eating and cooking apples, Blackberry Farm produces magnificent Bonne de Jersey pears, Meyer lemons, Greengage plums, Rhubarb, Jerusalem artichokes, Lavender, honey and eggs. Most of the produce is sold within a twenty-five mile radius if not directly from the farm.”
Come celebrate the Harvest at this annual event—but a Slow Food first. The Murchs generously open their barn doors to us all, and together we’ll work the small, hand-made cherrywood apple press to create the freshest, tastiest apple juice around. For those who need a break from their work at the press, there is plenty to see, and learn at this diverse, small farm, and if inclined--in Bolinas/ Point Reyes as well. Each attendee will receive a 1 Gallon jug of freshly squeezed Apple Juice.
NOTE (1): there will be 2 tracks offered:
First: Group A will enjoy a beautiful 5+ mile coastal hike, led by Farm Visits committee member Melissa, from Palomarin Beach to Bass Lake, where a Potluck Lunch will be held. The hike will last from 9 am to approximately 12:30 pm, then the Group will head to Blackberry Farm to continue with the afternoon apple pressing.
Second: Group B will head directly to Blackberry Farm, and enjoy a Potluck Lunch at the Farm at around 1 pm.
Please denote which Group you would like to join during registration.
NOTE (2): as this is a very small farm, we are limited in the number of cars and attendees that we can accommodate for this event. Carpool is strongly recommended. Details to follow. We apologize for this consideration.
